An artist at sea CATANA OC

Meeting Marianne Urth and Her Work

“Our Ocean Class 50 AMALIE was shipped to Australia after cruising for a month in the Mediterranean. Since then we have sailed more than 7.000 nm, exploring the East Coast of Australia,Vanuatu in the South Pacific and we are planning to sail to New Zealand and Fiji next year. Sailing on AMALIE is a real pleasure; it feels safe, it is comfortable to sail two handed and it is fast so you can get away from bad weather.”

“Yet I’m fascinated by bad weather, and it is in fact wild storms and big seas that inspire my art. I’m captivated by the ocean, the waves and the wind, but also a little bit scared of how fast it can change. Each day the first thing I do is check the weather app on my phone even when I’m on land. But it is that exhilarating feeling of being on the verge of danger that makes you feel alive and invites you to live in the moment. This is what I want to show in my paintings.

I paint a colourful abstract interpretation of the sea with its powerful movements of waves, shifting shapes and shades of blue and green. The presence of a colourful sail and a heeling mast suggest the state of the seas and the rapidly changing conditions or the excitement of an animated race.

For me, sailing and exploring new places is so enjoyable because it is all up to the people on board if we succeed and have a great experience. On a boat you are constantly being pushed out of your comfort zone but in the luxury of a Catana OC, you get the perfect combination of adventure, adrenaline and fun. “
